The 3.5 million people who lived in the Chernobyl region at the time of the accident more than 20 years ago, had their lives changed for ever.

Radiation

In the areas around Chernobyl the ground is still contaminated – damaged by radiation- and it will be contaminated for a long time to come. Hundreds of thousands of people have died and a lot of children and adults are still meeting an early death as a result of the disaster’s backwash.

The Scandinavian Children’s Mission operates mostly in the region of Volyn, a region the size of Skåne in Sweden with a population of about one million people. In this area alone an estimated 90 000 children are afflicted by the impressions of Chernobyl and 47 000 children are still living in a radiated environment. The food that is cultivated and eaten in the region is radioactive. The immune systems of these children are affected, they get tired, are ill a lot and there is a risk of them developing cancer at an early age.

Important contributions

The Scandinavian Children’s Mission supports and cooperates closely with different hospitals, rehabilitation- and correctional facilities in the country.  The Scandinavian Children’s Mission also sends over 300 ton humanitarian help to Ukraine each year.
